9 ways you should use emotional intelligence at work
9 ways you should use emotional intelligence at work9 ways you should use emotional intelligence at workA persons emotional intelligence at work is only as strong as their last conversation, according toJen Shirkani, an EQ expert and speaker. Shirkani breaks up emotional intelligence using the Three R method, which explains emotional intelligence as the ability to recognize your strengths and weaknesses, read others and your environment, and respond appropriately given the company and situation.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBased on thebehaviors of people with high EQs, heres how to use emotional intelligence at work in order to be successful.Using emotional intelligence at work as a leaderShutterstockLeaders, whether youre the CEO or an individual team manager, must use emotional intelligence at work every single day. While you may not interact with every person in the bro ea ch day, the company attitude begins with you.If I want an engaged employee then its important that I am therefore an emotionally engaging leader, Shirkani said.Leaders also need to be aware that they are following the chain of command in the office. Though you may feel that you have earned the right to ask any employee to complete a task, skipping the team manager by going straight to a specific employee could make that leader feel out of the loop, unimportant and frustrated. Basically, leaders need to be aware of the impact that their behavior is having on those around them every step of the way.Using emotional intelligence while leading a meetingShutterstockIf youre leading the meeting, you have to have a very keen eye on reading the room, Shirkani said. For example, the leader should be able to read the body language of attendees and identify if they need to take actions to gain back attention. In addition to keeping focus, the leader should also make sure that more outspoken empl oyees arent dominating the meeting. While its great to have a lively discussion, the leader should make sure that each attendee has the opportunity to speak, including those thatthat are more introverted.Using emotional intelligence while attending a meetingShutterstockThe meeting coordinator isnt the only person who has to worry about emotional intelligence in the conference room. In fact, its just as important for an attendee to use it as well.Shirkani remembers a time when she was in a meeting with a small group of leaders and one woman, who was completely engaged, didnt speak during the entire hour-long discussion.I thought, she runs the risk of not being included in the future because she hasnt contributed anything, Shirkani said. She didnt add any value to the meeting.Even shy employees need to step out of their comfort zone and recognize situations that call for the need to speak up.Using emotional intelligence during a performance reviewShutterstockEmotionally intelligent peo ple have a solid view of themselves, which includes having a deep understanding of what comes naturally to them and what doesnt. An emotionally intelligent person welcomes suggestions and ignores unhelpful negative comments. Instead of harping on a piece of criticism from your superior, you should use it to better yourself. To prepare for a formal review, Shirkani suggests thinking of the worst criticism that you could receive and imagine how you would react to it. If you picture yourself growing upset or angry, try having a friend give you the piece of feedback and think of a composed, thoughtful response. As always, remember to breathe and stay calm.Using emotional intelligence after receiving feedbackShutterstockUnfortunately for the thick-skinned, using emotional intelligence with performance reviews doesnt immediately stop when the meeting is over. You cant just be good at getting feedback, you have to actually do something with it in order to get leistungspunkt for it, Shirkani said. Taking action is a crucial part of using emotional intelligence at work because it involves being self-aware and having the ability to adapt.Using emotional intelligence while networkingShutterstockNetworking events can be intimidating spaces for introverts, but they are important opportunities for professionals to advance their careers. Emotional intelligence is extremely important during these events because it will allow introverts to step out of their comfort zone and interact with others despite their discomfort.Social interactions arent only difficult for introverts, according to Shirkani. Extroverts should use emotional intelligence in these instances to make sure that they are not completely controlling a conversation. At network events, extroverts may need to tone it down and allow introverts to come to them when they feel comfortable.Using emotional intelligence at work as a hiring managerShutterstockThe most proactive time to use emotional intelligence at work is wh en youre hiring a new employee. While one of the goals of developing EQ is coachability, hiring someone who is receptive to feedback is much smarter than starting with an emotional intelligence newbie. We can teach it, we can coach it, but if I can hire it. .. Im way ahead of the game, Shirkani said.Hiring emotional intelligence may be easy for an EQ guru, but not everyone knows how to test these skills. Shirkani recommends asking one question to test the three emotional intelligence pillars self-awareness, social awareness, and self-control. The question is, Have you ever unintentionally offended or upset somebody? And describe the details for me.If the candidate struggles to find an answer to this question, he or she most likely dont have strong emotional intelligence skills. This question tests that the person has the self-awareness know when his or her behavior has a negative impact on another person. The answer will also help you see if the vorstellungsgesprchee has the social s kills to admit and work through mistakes.Using emotional intelligence as a candidate during an interviewShutterstockSelf-awareness is the key component of using emotional intelligence during an interview. By having a full understanding of your strengths, youll be able to easily articulate them to the hiring manager. Another use of self-awareness is that it allows you to flip the script and interview the hiring manager. Its a good idea to ask about the persons managing style in order to see if it fits what you need as an employee.Using emotional intelligence as a new hireShutterstockNew hires usually enter a job motivated to make a splash in the company, but Shirkani warns them not to be overzealous. Before we start spouting off what we did at our old company, its important that were really observing for a while and figuring out what the rules are, what the norm is and what the culture is like, Shirkani said.A new employee should use emotional intelligence to ease into suggesting chan ges as not to overwhelm or upset anyone. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How To Learn From A Bad Interview
How To Learn From A Bad InterviewHow To Learn From A Bad Interview The bewerbungsbewerberinterview component of your job search can be the most stressful part of the process. It can be an intense and anxiety-inducing time because it feels like your future depends on this moment. Sometimes, you can be uber-prepared and confident going into an interview, and yet, once its done, you can feel that somewhere, somehow it went horribly wrong. However, its possible that you can learn from this experience. Here are five important takeawaysGet yourself to a coffee shop right after your interview. Sit down, grab your notebook and pen, and begin documenting your experience. Start with your feelings and thoughts post-interview. How did you feel when you entered the office, during the interview, and when it was over? Can you pinpoint when you started feeling something was wrong? Was there an obvious turning point in the interview where you knew you screwed up?Next, document all t he questions that were asked. Think about your answers that you were unhappy with. This is a great approach if you are just starting your interview process. If there were questions you were unprepared for , now youll know for next time. Finally, be brutally honest with yourself about your feelings towards the position and company. What was your mindset like going into the room? Were you truly interested in the job? Did you get enough sleep the night before? Being honest with yourself helps you to accept your responsibility in the process and give you insight into how to do better next time.Seek out people you can trust. Share your job interview experience with them and see what they think. Perhaps they have a different perspective they can offer you that you never considered and give you honest feedback.Despite how you think the interview went, dont skip this step. If you made a blunder (like calling the interviewer by the wrong name, not asking any questions or spilling your gl ass of water), take advantage of the thank-you note to recover from your mistake and provide clarification if you can. This may even be the opportunity to ask for another chanceWhat did you do well during this particular interview? Think of the things you did leading up to and during the interview that you can be proud of. Write them down. And always remember The fact that you got an interview is an accomplishment in and of itself.Resiliency is key at this stage. Dont beat yourself up. There are so many factors that influence an interview that are beyond your control, so dont go down a path of despair and self-doubt. Be extra gentle with yourself. Take the time to feel the disappointment, process what happened, mull it over, complain to your friends - then transition yourself into accepting what happened so you can let that interview go, and look forward to the next one, armed with everything you have learned through the process. Just like Nat King Cole says, Pick yourself up, du st yourself off, start all over again. This article originally appeared on The Well , Jopwells digital magazine. The Well is the digital magazine of Jopwell, the career advancement platform for Black, Latino/Hispanic, and Native American professionals and students. Tips for Writing Letters of Recommendation
Tips for Writing Letters of Recommendation Tips for Writing Letters of Recommendation Almost everyone is asked to write a reference letter at some time during his or her career. Whether its for an employee, a friend, or someone youve worked with, it is important to be prepared to write an effective letter of recommendation. Its equally important to be ready to say no if youre not comfortable recommending someone for employment. Read below for tips on how to respond to a recommendation request, and how to write a strong letter of recommendation. When You Have Nothing Positive to Say Its actually in the persons best interest for you to politely decline writing a reference letter if you cant provide more than a wishy-washy endorsement. A less than positive reference can cause as much harm as a negative reference. Employers are usually good at reading between the lines and will pick up on what youre not saying. If you decline, the person can move on to another reference who may be able to provide a glowing recommendation. A simple way out is to say that you are not familiar enough with their work or background to provide a reference. That way you can minimize any potential hurt feelings. Heres how to decline a request for a reference. Request Information If youre thrilled to be asked, but not sure what to say, ask the person for a copy of their resume and a list of accomplishments. This will give you guidelines to use when composing a letter. If you are writing a letter of recommendation for a student applying for a job or internship, you might also ask for a list of their related coursework. Ask for information on what the recommendation is for. If it is for a specific job, ask for the job listing. If it is for a school, ask about the type of program they are applying to. This will help you focus your letter on skills and qualities related to the position or school. Also be sure to ask the person who you should submit the letter to, and how to send it. Some letters must be sent in hard copy, and others are sent via email, so it is important to follow directions carefully. Start With the Basics Start by stating how long youve known the person. Briefly provide details on how you know the person (for example, if the person worked for you, if you are neighbors if the person was your student, etc.). Also, include any relevant dates â" if he or she was an employee, include dates of employment. If he or she was a student, state when. Include Details Continue by describing the persons skills and performance, and what makes them an ideal candidate for a potential new employer. Include two or three outstanding attributes, and try to provide an example of a time the person displayed these attributes. Try to select attributes that connect to the position he or she is applying for. If possible, look at the job listing ahead of time, or ask the person what kinds of jobs he or she is applying to. Look at the job description (or search online for job listings for the type of job the person is applying for). Look for qualities included in the job description that remind you of the person youâre writing the recommendation for. End by summarizing why you are recommending this person for employment. Offer to Follow Up At the end of the letter, you may also want to provide a phone number or email address. This way, employers can follow up if they have questions or want more information. Heres a list of information that should be included in a recommendation letter, and a letter of recommendation template to use to start your own letter. Be Professional Be sure to thoroughly read and proofread your letter before sending it, looking for any grammar or spelling errors. Consider asking a friend or family member to edit your letter for you. Write your letter in proper business letter format. Select a clear, easy-to-read font like Times New Roman or Arial. Follow Instructions Submit your letter exactly as the person asks you to. If they do not tell you how to send the letter (or to whom to send the letter), ask. If youre sending an email reference, list your contact information after your typed signature rather than at the top of the pgae. 5 Ways to Grow Your Network From Scratch In a New Industry
5 Ways to Grow Your Network From Scratch In a New Industry 5 Ways to Grow Your Network From Scratch In a New Industry For most people, building your network begins while youâre still in college and looking to find a job related to your field of study. But what happens when you realize you want to take your career in an entirely new direction? Suddenly, it doesnât seem like such a good idea to have a tiny network, or a network filled with people youâve worked with in your current line of work. If you want to grow your professional network and connections in a particular industry, you need to look outside the circle of people youâve met at work and in your program at school. You need to actually get out there - online or off - and meet new people. So whether youâve moved to a new area and need as much help as you can get, or you simply want to expand your professional circle for a potential career change , here are five ways to grow your network from scratch. The first step in building a network from scratch is to get outside of your comfort zone and physically leave your house to do something new. Because as valuable as virtual relationships can be, interacting with a group of people in person is the quickest way to develop a strong sense of camaraderie - especially when youâre looking to meet people who arenât already in your line of work. As you evaluate your interests and compare them to your potential new field, donât make the mistake of assuming that only a professional group can help you grow your professional network. Any hobby that attracts a wide variety of people will help you expand your circle and potentially help you network in a new industry. Just start by thinking of a hobby or interest youâve had for years (or perhaps used to have before you got busy with your career!). Are there any adult groups you can join that would help you pursue that interest? From joining a Toastmasters International group to volunteering at your local ASPCA or pet shelter, these kinds of hobby interests are fertile grounds for forming new relationships with people of all different kinds of professional backgrounds. If you canât make time to attend a regular group meeting (or you simply want to take more than one step toward building your network), being active in a virtual community is the next best thing. Most professional industries have active online communities on all the major social media platforms, from regular Twitter threads on industry topics to more general Facebook and LinkedIn groups. Get online, request access and go learn about your field of interest. Consider starting by asking members what they wish theyâd known when they were first becoming active in their industry (but be prepared to receive a score of responses!). If youâd rather invest your time in a more formal setting than free online communities, consider joining a professional community in your industry, such as SHRM for human resources management, AWAI for professional writing or NSPE for licensed professional engineers. These memberships often come with a yearly fee, but it can be a worthwhile investment if it encourages you to take your participation more seriously. Another way to build your network is to get in on the conversation around a specific cause within the industry. For example, if youâre looking to become an educator, you donât need to focus only on education. You can also look for niche communities within the field such as educational technology, curriculum or International Student Exchange programs. The same could be said for any other field, from project management for a specific cause to lawyers who work for specific clients - every industry features niche topics that offer leads for both online and offline communities to engage with. Youâre probably still paying off your student loans for the degree you earned⦠Why not let your alma mater help you expand your network, too? Particularly if you attended a large school, there are no doubt a number of opportunities for expanding your network and meeting new people based on your shared educational background. Here are just a few suggestions for how to put your school to work for you: People love to help people they love. So while tapping your existing network might not be the first thing you think of when youâre trying to create a whole new network, you might be surprised to find out just how well-connected your friends are. The trick is to ask for help in a way that makes it clear you wonât do any damage to their relationships should they choose to introduce you. To make sure you frame this request in a way that will get a response, write a short, personal email to 5-7 friends you think might be able to help you, and ask them if they happen to know anyone in the industry youâre looking to network in. Make it clear that youâd like to connect with this person to ask one or two specific questions - not to ask for a job or any other excessive favors. Then sit back and see if you can benefit from your friendâs uncle-in-lawâs business associate who can help you learn more about a given topic. The best time to build your network is long before youâll need to draw on it. Use these tips to meet new people now, and they just might help you find your dream job in the future.

Jesse Draper and Ben Higgins have a podcast for women
Jesse Draper and Ben Higgins have a podcast for women Jesse Draper and Ben Higgins have a podcast for women Jesse Draper is a venture capitalist legacy. Her father is Tim Draper, a partner at Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and her grandfather, as well as her great-grandfather, were also in the business. But donât think she is riding on anyoneâs coattails. Her family may have sparked her interested in investing in industry disruptors, but she has turned it into something incredible with Halogen Ventures, a VC firm primarily focused on female founders. Her portfolio includes The Skimm, Carbon38, Sugarfina, and Finery and in December of last year, they closed their first fund at $10.4 million. But in addition to giving them the funding to bring their companies to new levels, she also wants to highlight these women and give them a voice. That is why she decided to start a podcast primarily focused on women founders. Draper is a lover of podcasts but found there wasnât one program out there doing this.âThereâs not a lot of women in business opportunities on podcasts. Thereâs a lot of technology-oriented ones with a lot of men and I just wanted a great place to feature women in business,â she told Ladders. âThereâs a couple I listen to but none that were giving me what I wanted.âIt has been widely reported that female entrepreneurs struggle much more than men when it comes to raising money. Investment rounds in startups with all-male founders in 2017 outnumbered female-led companies by a ratio of more than 18 to 1, according to data PitchBook Data Inc.So clearly a show like this has a need and an important purpose. But who to select for a co-host was the main question? Perhaps another female VC or entrepreneur but Draper decided to go in a different direction. One that was towards everyoneâs favorite guilty pleasure: The Bachelor. Ben Higgins, who was featured on ABCâs The Bachelor in 2016, did date upwards of 30+ plus women at the same time, take romantic helicopter, horseback and other various romantic animal and automobile rides, and broke many a heart at a rose ceremony, but he also is the co-founder and President of his social enterprise Generous Coffee.Generous is a âfor-purposeâ business which means it uses profits to fund operational expenses of nonprofits or social enterprises that are doing sustainable, helpful work all over the world. In other words, he is not just living off his television fame and selling things on Instagram. He is trying to make a difference. And he is all about women, which is why Draper was drawn to him to help her launch this project.âWho better to do it with then someone many women love? He is very social and enterprise focused. We come from very different backgrounds and have very different perspectives on the world but we are both looking to elevate women so Iâm really excited to do this with him. Thereâs no way you could love him more now!â Draper said. The podcast is called âLady Bosses (and Ben)â, and is produced and distributed through iHeartRadio. Each week, theyâll sit down with a different CEO, entrepreneur, or business mogul and learn how they achieved their goals, what challenges they face building a company, and the tips they can share with the next generation of business leaders. Upcoming guests include Brooklyn Decker, founder of Finery, and Alli Webb, the founder of Dry Bar. âYou will hear a lot about women in business and women just juggling it all,â said Draper, who is a mother of two young children. âItâs really hard, How do you make it work? Itâs a real business show.âShe recalls talking to Decker about the experience of fundraising while pregnant. âThose are real conversations that are cool and different to think about,â she said.

Turning Off the Career Should Haves to Manage Career Regret
Turning Off the Career âShould Havesâ to Manage Career Regret Turning Off the Career âShould Havesâ to Manage Career Regret Especially if you are comparing your progress with that of others, thoughts such as, âI should have climbed up the ladder by now,â âI should have picked a different career,â and âI should have ditched this job already,â can nag at you and force you to conclude that your attempts at career progression are pointless thus planting the seeds of anger and resentment that may lead to indifference and resignation. Not only do these feelings affect how you feel about yourself but your loss of motivation and ambition become obvious to others who will become more likely to overlook you for big projects and less likely to approach you in social situations. There is only one way out of this rut, and that is to revolutionize your ways of thinking. The best approach to changing your thinking is to transform the depressing and demotivating âshould haveâ thoughts into the more inspiring and productive thoughts of âwhat ifs.â And you canât do this alone. Youâll first need some good friends or trusted colleagues to help you brainstorm, and the added perspectives of people other than yourself can help you see your regrets in a different light. Donât allow your own negative thinking to affect the people you choose to help in this endeavor as the more positive and creative your team is the better the end result will be. Once youâve assembled your group of positive thinkers, come up with as many âwhat ifâ questions as you can that are directly related to the cause(s) of your feelings of regret. Examples may include: âWhat if I used my skills to work for a cause I feel strongly about?â âWhat if I taught others the basics of my field?â âWhat if I coached others to improve their own skills?â Finally, turn those what-ifs into actionable items. Figure out which of them are worth exploring and considering as potential replacement career paths. The more excited and energized you feel over a particular possibility, the more you should work on it to make it real. You should find that by simply working towards a goal that you find promising will reinvigorate you and give you a more positive attitude and outlook. No matter when they hit, career regrets can have a devastating effect on your outlook and can create the conditions of a self-fulfilling prophecy where your fears are confirmed by the worldâs reaction to your own negativity and sense of futility. But by seeking out some support from the positive people in your life and working to put your career in perspective, you can change your âshould havesâ to âwhat ifsâ and discover new ways to find fulfillment in your career.

5 Crucial Steps for Making a Career Change in 2016
5 Crucial Steps for Making a Career Change in 2016 5 Crucial Steps for Making a Career Change in 2016 5 Crucial Steps for Making a Career Change in 2016 Is a new career on your holiday wish list? Utilize these techniques to land your dream job. [TWEET] As 2015 draws to a close, it's common for thoughts to turn to resolutions and changes. If you're unsatisfied in your career or stuck in the wrong job, make one of your resolutions to find a job you love in the New Year. Start making a career change by using these five career transition techniques. Step 1: Figure out your why. TED Talks speaker Simon Sinek points out that it all starts with why. Why do you want to leave your current job? Why are you thinking of making a career change? What do you really want to be doing and why? Maybe you already are in touch with your purpose or maybe you've never thought about it, but connecting with your why can keep you going when the going gets tough. Step 2: Use your imagination. As professional sports players and their coaches know, you have to see the shot before you take it. The same is true for a career transition. Before you take any steps at all, you have to imagine yourself in a new position. Where will you work? What will you do there? What will you be paid? How will you feel in this new role? Flesh out your vision as much as possible and hold onto it. Step 3: Prepare your resume. This is your primary marketing material and it needs to reflect your latest accomplishments in a way that highlights your suitability for the next great role. A great resume for career change is critical, do not do this step halfway. A great resume will not necessarily get you the job, but a bad one can kill your opportunity. Invest in a professional service if this is not an area of strength for you. Step 4: Do some research. Signing up for job boards and applying to jobs is one way to look for work, but it's also a good idea to do your own homework. Based on Step 1, figure out what companies out there match your values and do the kinds of things you want to be doing and what qualifications they require from candidates. Do not, under any circumstances become afraid of what you may find out. It is possible you will learn you need more experience or education, but knowledge is power. Go back to your why and get to work on making yourself the perfect candidate for your perfect job. Step 5: Put yourself out there. Once you've identified the companies where you'd like to work and ascertained that you have the skills required for your new job, see if you can get an introduction. Use LinkedIn or other professional networking associations to determine who you know at your target company, or can introduce you to someone there, and reach out. It's a good idea to craft an email explaining what you want to do, and for whom, and ask for an introduction. Make sure to use appropriate networking etiquette and reciprocate where possible. There's no reason why you can't find yourself making a career change in the New Year; the secret to getting there is to be methodical and pursue it! Ready for a new career in the New Year?Get started today.

The rules of effectiveness A lifelong process
The rules of effectiveness A lifelong process The rules of effectiveness A lifelong process When Peter Drucker was asked to participate in a study of geniuses, he politely declined.A famous happiness and creativity researcher was in the process of writing a book on the commonalities of people who had achieved culture-disrupting success in their domain. The final study included 91 participants from different fields, including 14 Nobel Prize winners. When Drucker received the invitation to participate, however, he simply said that one of the reasons for his accomplishments was that he was very deliberate about where his time went.As fascinating as such a study would be, it would mean that he would have to interrupt his own schedule to do something that didnât align with his creative goals and personal objectives. It makes sense, too. Drucker is considered the father of modern management theory, and at the foundation of his work was his belief that success in anything began with effectiveness.Long before the modern productivity movement, Drucker laid out his own ideas about wh at it means to get the most out of yourself. Many of them are counterintuitive to much of the gospel preached today, and most of them are timeless in their relevance and application.Regardless of whether your goal is to change the world or to simply build better habits, you need to know how to manage yourself to get the most out of the limited time that you have.Being effective is about successfully aligning behavior with your intentions. Itâs harder than it sounds, but with some of Druckerâs principles, we can see how it can be accomplished by: Designing the practice, not the person Embracing purposeful abandonment Switching from exploring to exploiting Before you make an external impact, you have to first learn to manage your orientation.Design the practice, not the personOne of the biggest mistakes that people make when trying to get themselves to change their behavior to align with whatever it is they want is that they try to first change the person. The line of thinking is that if I want to be thinner, I have to become someone who weighs 10 pounds less. If I want to write more, I have to be someone who will one day write a novel. It presumes that an identity change is possible once a decision has been made to change. The problem is that this kind of thinking overlooks the fact that itâs rarely a sudden change in a person that produces a result, but more generally, itâs a practice or an accompanying system that slowly changes the identity of the person over a long, sustained period of time.In his many years studying different companies, one of the things that Peter Drucker realized was that itâs almost never an individual empl oyeeâs fault that something isnât getting done as it should. Quite often, itâs the general practice or a system that is faulty in some hidden way.If the communication in a department is bad, itâs often due to a lack of strong infrastructure. If someone isnât performing as they should, itâs usually due to poor expectations and incentives.Similarly, most of the time, when you want to improve your effectiveness but are struggling to do so, itâs not because you lack willpower or discipline or that youâre not someone who is suitable for a particular task, but itâs that your practice isnât designed for optimal performance. If you want to exercise more, you need a system that begins consistently at a set time, and you need to know beforehand what youâre going to do. Same thing if you want to write more.System design and good organization are better solutions than ambiguous identity changes.Embrace purposeful abandonmentThe modern productivity craze thatâs taken over the world was actually predicted by Drucker. He knew that many workplaces were poorly designed for most knowledge work and that one of the differentiating competitive advantages for organizations in the 21st century would be to figure out how they can get the most out of their employees while keeping them happy. One way, however, in which weâve completely diverged from Druckerâs idea of effectiveness is how we actually think about the idea of productivity and its role in the working world. The current connotation we associate with productivity has to do with efficiency and output. The focus is on doing more, and itâs on ensuring we can squeeze in as much as possible.Druckerâs idea of effectiveness was actually to remove. It was to prune the unnecessary distractions and to direct focus onto only the few things that really mattered. Rather than more applications, tools, projects, and work, he wanted less. In his own words:âI have yet to see an executive, regardless of rank or s tation, who could not consign something like a quarter of the demands on his time to the wastepaper basket without anybodyâs noticing their disappearance.âIf you actually look at the results that youâre aiming at and break them down, youâll realize that most of the commitments that youâve taken on could easily be ignored without any harm.Itâs really easy to convince ourselves that something is worth doing or that something needs our attention without thinking it through. A lot of the time, extra commitments add little value and steal away more time than theyâre worth. They misallocate focus on the unnecessary.Itâs worth periodically setting aside some time to look at your to-do list or your tasks and commitments to see which of them you can intentionally abandon to make your life easier.Switch from exploring to exploitingBy default, on a day to day basis, most organizations focus on solving problems. Similarly, most people spend the majority of their time looking for weaknesses or reacting to issues. If a problem or a weakness is a bottleneck that is holding back everything else in the operation of a company or in your life, then it makes sense that this is the case. However, much of the time, these problems and weaknesses eat up more time than they should, and the cost of not solving them is rarely disastrous. Theyâre needless tangents of exploration. We move from one small thing to another, but we donât commit to the big stuff.Progress isnât made in the maintenance of the status quo by reacting to issues. It occurs when you build up the courage to exploit a perceived risk that hides an opportunity. Itâs only when you do something different that hasnât been done and dedicate yourself to its cause.Drucker consistently observed that the managers of companies that succeeded over time were very good at asking themselves what the highest impact thing they could be working on was and then allocating their resources in that direction, in spit e of the short-term cost. While many such opportunities initially appear as risks, over the long-term, not taking them is actually riskier because of their potential payoff. Quite often, these opportunities also tend to either make the competing problems obsolete or they create a new way to solve them.As valuable as it is to look out for issues to solve to sustain what you have already built, true effectiveness comes from using your strengths to further focus in on high-impact avenues.Always exploring for different fires to put out rarely produces a result that compounds on itself. The only way that occurs is when you choose a new path and exploit it until it builds out.All you need to knowIn any domain, many factors combine to determine a personâs ability to succeed, but there is almost no field in which you can thrive over a long period of time without being effective. Before the modern definition of productivity, the legendary management consultant Peter Drucker gave us a better way to think about our ability to get results in any field of work. Here are three takeaways worth holding onto:I. Design the practice, not the person. Effectiveness begins with the person, but changing ourselves isnât the best way to create behavior that will get us what we want. The system in which the person operates is a far better predictor of a result than someoneâs internal intentions. Align incentives and organize your commitments.II. Embrace purposeful abandonment. Most productivity advice focuses on more. More efficiency, more output, and more tools. Thatâs generally counterproductive. There are many things we all do that donât need to be done to begin with. Routinely reflect on your goals and audit how well your tasks and commitments align with direction.III. Switch from exploring to exploiting. True effectiveness doesnât come from solving minor problems or reflecting on personal weaknesses to either maintain or slightly improve the status quo. Itâs a produc t of exploiting hidden opportunities that otherwise appear as risks. Always choose the high-impact avenue when allocating your time.In reality, it takes more than just reading and knowing to become effective. Itâs a lifelong process, and it requires long-term dedication. The good thing is that itâs often worth it.Effectiveness is about control over your time and your impact. Itâs universally crucial.Want to think and live smarter? Zat Rana publishes a free weekly newsletter for 30,000+ readers at Design Luck.

Learn How Employers Hire an Employee
Learn How Employers Hire an Employee Learn How Employers Hire an Employee Sometimes when youre job searching, the wait at each step in the hiring process can feel interminable. You wait to see if the employer received your resume. Then, you wait to see if you will be selected for a job interview. Then you wait for the interview that is probably a week away. Then, on the day of the interview, youre nervous and worried and still waiting because the interviews at 3 p.m. Perhaps some insight into the steps an employer takes to hire an employee will help you understand what is going on behind the scenes. Its not about you, for the most part. Insights for Job Candidates Recruiting and hiring an employee usually starts with a recruitment planning meeting and moves on from there. Applicant resume review by Human Resources and the hiring manager is a lengthy process while you have no idea if the employer filed your resume among those of the most qualified applicants - or not. Some polite employers automatically generate a candidate response form letter thanking you for submitting your resume. So, in these cases, you know the employer received it. Once the HR people contact you to schedule an interview, depending on whether the organization uses a team approach - which I recommend - scheduling the interview team can take several weeks. The wait can feel especially long after you experience your first interview as you wait to hear if they will invite you back for a second interview to meet more potential coworkers. In a large company, sometimes bureaucracy adds layers of time to the hiring process. Plus, you might be competing with a large pool of candidates. In a state, federal, or local government position, the employer takes many steps to consider internal candidates, too, prior to considering external candidates. Sometimes, between the start of a recruitment and the job offer, an agency loses funding for the position. And, organizations are becoming notorious with job searchers for failings in courtesy and thoughtfulness in their communication with candidates. Many organizations dont and claim that its a time and resource issue. How Fast Growing Companies Hire an Employee A lot depends on how fast the company is growing, too. In a fast-growing company, the Human Resource staff members are generally swamped with employee recruiting. At the same time, in a fast-growing company, many of the work systems are broken. What worked for 75 employees no longer works at 150 or 200 employees. So, the people who are responsible for leading the charge and hiring new employees are doubly swamped; they are creating their hiring systems and recruiting good people as fast as they can - at the same time. Its a challenge to get back to candidates even to schedule a second interview. While You Wait What can you do in the meantime? Make sure that you send a thank you letter following the first interview. You will also want to keep your job search system up-to-date and moving forward. A polite phone call is often returned. And, just one time, you can send the Human Resources staff person or the hiring manager an email asking about the status of the position they are filling. In an employee empowering and participatory work environment, the number of people involved in a hiring decision makes selection challenging, too. Just getting five or six people together to do an interview can take several weeks. But, you dont want to work for a company that does not empower and enable employees, so often the best companies take the longest. I hired an employee once who told me she had a job offer on the table during our first interview. I told her truthfully that our company would not make an offer to anyone for a minimum of three weeks, so she would need to decide. She turned down the offer and waited because she wanted the job I had available. It turned out to be a good choice for her - we hired her.
